Discuss the methods and technology used in damping buildings when Essay

Discuss the methods and technology used in damping buildings when resonance leads to SHM caused by the wind and earthquakes - Essay ExampleThe amplitude of these oscillations is time dependent and is inversely proportional to the time. Higher damping means that the oscillations reduce in their size (Fang et al. 1999).In physics terms, the tendency of a system to oscillate at amplitude that is great at certain frequencies as compared to others is called resonance. This situation occurs when the system has the capacity to stockpile and shift energy easily between more than two modes of storage. The losses that exit at the process of this cycle are called damping. With small damping, the resonance frequency tends to be the same as the natural frequency of the system. There are cases where systems bring on multiple resonance frequencies that are distinct (Kijewski-Correa and Pirnia, 2007).Damping is hence the physical phenomenon of reducing motion through dissipation of energy. In ta ll buildings, damping is important due to unlike reasons. The tall buildings are known to vibrate at natural frequencies that are low. This is a factor that makes the buildings to be very susceptible to dynamic resonance in cases of earthquake and wind. Wind energy is usually at its highest when the frequencies are low. Additionally, to the rejoinder to the wind gustiness, there is a common form of dynamic wind response that is due to vortex shedding. The circumstances mentioned results to the creation of movements of the structure that is at right angles to the course of the storm (Terman, 1992).Damping in tall buildings is mainly caused by intrinsic and subsidiary sources. Intrinsic damping comes from connections, cladding, friction and seismic motion in this case, this paper is interested in the seismic causes of the damping which is earthquakes. Supplementary damping is due to engineered devices such as friction devices, awkward and slosh dampers and tuned mass dampers (Kats uhiko, 2005). There are broad methods that have been largely

The drug is typically chewed and similar with other illegal drugs, produces a feeling of euphoria inducing hypnosis, hyperactivity, hallucinations, violence, suicidal depression and physical exhaustion. even so though not as intense as cocaine, khat has the ability of reducing a persons motivation with continued use (Winslow and Reavy 2007).Even though the price of khat is expected to discourag e consumption among the low and middle income classes, the police expect that it will be a phenomenal drug for young adults because of it can be chewed instead of being injected or smoked (Winslow and Reavy 2007). The effort of seizing the drugs is a way to combat the problems which is associated with drug addiction once a distribution network is set-up. It should be noted that khat is gaining popularity indicated by the presence of 25 tons of smuggled khat in the United States in 2006 (Winslow and Reavy 2007).In this story, the highlighted police role is crime fighter whereby the police act in order to fight the crime of drug smuggling, illegal drug trafficking, and the likeliness of drug abuse which can disrupt peace and order in the community. In this particular story, I believe that the media has no intention of romanticizing the story by clearly labeling police as a crime fighter. Since the story only talks about the seizure of khat and the likely effects of khat abuse, the ro le of the police as a crime fighter stated in here is real. I believe that police are really committed in combating drug smuggling, drug trafficking, and drug abuse because it being unable to stop them can post larger problems for them in the future. This report highlights all of the factors behind the decline and the current slow recovery of the steel industry, including the aforementioned tariff and labor union influence, the existence of increasing pension payouts for Baby baby boomer retirees, changing consumer and industrial customer buying behaviors, changing construction patterns globally, as well as the influence of Wall Street on this industry. Decl ine Factors Tariffs and grasp Impacts In the early 2000s, the U.S. steel industry was plagued with considerable problems that were causing significant disruptions to profitability. First, there were many bubbles occurring in the stock market during this period that were eroding consumer effrontery and reducing construction for materials requiring steel in their construction, such as automotive products and various consumer appliances. In an effort to help companies that were on the verge of bankruptcy during this period, prexy Bush imposed import tariffs as an effort to slow illegal dumping of foreign-made steel and also to boost profitability for these struggling industries. These tariffs consisted of a 15 to 30 percent commission by early 2002, however the end results of this effort were the production of internal disputes with domestic steel industry ownership who felt that this limited competitive edge and also made foreign buyers seek forward-looking market opportunities f or the export of their own domestically-made steel (Blecker, 2002). Therefore, even though it be more opportunities for domestic production to increase, it limited the scope of steel-related partnerships with disgruntled foreign steel producers and limited their expansion potential across the globe. Further, the backlash of various switch disputes did, indeed, force steel manufacturers outside of the United States to begin the process of looking for new export opportunities, thus eroding even more opportunities for this industry in the process. Additionally, during this time period, less regulatory presence in the steel industry gave considerable authority to various labor unions, such as the United Steelworkers of the States (USWA), which began demanding higher wage increases for workers and therefore eroding profitability in an already struggling industry (Ikenson, 2002). What was occurring was that steel industries were already experiencing lowered demand for products both dome stically and abroad and were on the verge of bankruptcy at the time. The power of these unions was exerted in an effort to prevent, at any cost, plant closings in an effort to save American jobs with the USWA. These efforts were ultimately successful, in conjunction with the new tariffs imposed, and forced steel industry owners to continue production and operate, essentially, in the red for a period of years until new regulatory powers began to erode the power of these labor unions. According to The American Heritage dictionary success is, the achievement of something desired, planned, or act.The word success itself means to achieve your goal or get the point that you looking for. Success means to me guard peace and love in addition to get married and to autograph heaven after this life is over.To be sure, everybody who has peace and love is a successful succeeding person. Without peace and love at that place is no success. You wake up in the morning and you dont worry about anything that day that is success for me, because th e life is short, you dont pose to be concerned about anything. Also if you gravel a family that loves you and is always happy for what you are doing, that is success. In addition, if you take care of your old parents and they love you and they have it away a happy life, which is success for me.Additionally, success is also something that is viewed differently in the eyes of everyone. This is because success means doing what I have always wanted do being where I have always wanted to be. My goal in life is to eventually get married to a good wife and have many happy children and if I accomplished that, then I could view myself as having success.Lastly, meaning of success for me is to enter the heaven after this life is over. We deal that life in this world is too short, and we dont know when we are going to die and what we are going to get after this life. That is a simple answer do good deeds in this world and you are going to be successful in the life hereafter. That means you enter the heaven for sure and that is big reward from God to his mankind. There is no dying after this life that means if you dont enter the heaven you will be the loser and who ever go in the heaven will be the winner. In conclusion, I still agree with the idea I presented however according to the dictionary and many other resources, success means to them achievement. But according to my own opinion success means to believe the ones of God, and to have peace and love in your whole life, and to get in heaven the life hereafter.

Psychology of Adolescence Essay Example for Free

Psychology of Adolescence EssayBoysTown is a registered charity and a national organization for youth welfare in Australia. It focuses on back uping separate youths who are at risk of fond animadversion to enhance their quality of life story ( younker friendly). It recognizes several causes of kind exclusion among separate youths that conduct to be addressed, which include single parenthood, low self-esteem, physical and mental wellness problems, substance abuse, lack of work experience, lastal illiteracy, and underdeveloped private and vocational skills (Youth affable).BoysTown also recognizes that most of the disadvantage youths came from families who restrain a history of intergenerational un role and welfare dependency and from Indigenous backgrounds (Youth social). BoysTown offers several social comprehension programs to help disadvantage youths to improve their life. The programs include Kids Helpline, Youth Programs, Indigenous community development, Family programs, and Intermediate labor markets. The key attribute of these programs is that they emphasized sustainable outcomes while they blaspheme on safe strategies for working with youths who are at risk of social exclusion (Youth social). BoysTowns Kids Helpline is a national telephone and web-based discuss program that provides services for more than 60,000 children and youths across the country. The Youth programs offer personal development, training and employment assistance to more than 3,500 youths in communities.BoysTown is collaborating with key stakeholders to work on a social inclusion project with four remote Indigenous communities in the East Kimberleys (Youth social). It also provides parenting programs and family refuges such as home-based get and training to make way for the transition of disadvantaged youths to the wider world (Youth social). The organization also operates various social enterprises and transitional employment programs in order to provide 400 youths per year with paid work and on-the-job training. There are various indicators that demonstrate the degree of social exclusion suffered by families and children, which include low-birth-weight babies, permanent exclusion from school, the number of children living in unemployed households, teenage pregnancy, low academic achievement, and the number of children aged 10-16 who are in youthful offender institutions (Pierson, 2002). The indicators of social exclusion at the level of community include overcrowded housing, a blue percentage of households without a bank account, poor community participation, and high levels of burglaries (Pierson, 2002).The key forces that increases the likelihood of social exclusion are poverty and low income, lack of social supports and networks, lack of access to the labor market, the impact of the local neighborhood, and exclusion from services (Pierson, 2002). Pierson (2002) suggests ways to address social exclusion, which include maximizing income an d securing basic resources improving social networks and supports collaborating in partnership with local organizations and agencies developing channels of telling participation for users, local residents, and their organizations and concentrating on whole neighborhoods.Socially excluded youths have a significant cost impact on society in terms of publicly-funded health services, justice system and social security costs, and the impact of decreased soulfulness earning capacity, lost productivity, and decreased tax revenue (Youth social). The Australian organisation is investing in developing the capability of the not-for-profit organization to provide more holistic, community-based strategies to respond to social exclusion, especially among untested people (Youth social).Models of incumbrance must be multi-dimensional and aimed at providing issue people with a comprehensive range of support over an extended period of time (Youth social). They should also be based on a holistic advancement in order for one-year-old people to overpower personal barriers improve their strengths, health, well-being, life and interpersonal skills develop their self-esteem and the ability to learn and succeed in shifting to independent living, training or work, and further education (Youth social).BoysTowns Youth programs are effective in helping youths who are at risk of social exclusion because they incorporate individual assessment, counseling, and support, life skills training, personal development and mentoring vocational skills training, employment assistance and post-placement support (Youth social). Young people must be provided assistance into paid employment by giving advice, training and other help that they need to make them more employable (Kemp, 2005).Focusing on individual agency such as fresh peoples attributes, qualifications, decision-making, and behavior allows teen people to successfully transition from welfare to work (Kemp, 2005). The Kids Helpline at BoysTown is similar to a mentoring program that helps disadvantaged young people to tackle social exclusion. Mentoring consists of an informal educative role and personal support and encouragement (Pierson, 2002). Mentor acts as a trusted counselor or guide (Pierson, 2002).The goal of a mentoring or counseling program is to connect two individuals in a one to one voluntary relationship, with one individual being more experienced than the other and with the hope that their knowledge and skills will be transferred (Pierson, 2002). The key features of a mentoring relationship include a voluntary governance as required by the individual being mentored and can be ended by either party at any time, interpersonal skills of mentors to misrepresent and monitor the relationship, and the understanding of both mentored and mentors about the boundaries and objective of the relationship (Pierson, 2002).Colley (2003) mentions the popularity of mentoring with policy-makers because it addresses t heir concerns such as the moralization of social exclusion. The indite adds that the solution to social exclusion of young people depends on their re-engagement with the labor market and/or formal learning routes. The key role of mentoring is to provide a way for the re-engagement by changing young peoples values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior to engage their personal commitment to become employable (Colley, 2003).Mentoring helps young people in terms of empowering them, discussing aspirations, and making them more hard-nosed about their view of work (Colley, 2003). It is also important to assist young people to attain skills in areas such as confidence building, problem solving, usefulness of interpersonal skills, punctuality, and team working in order to enhance their personal effectiveness in the workplace (Colley, 2003).Moreover, mentoring is also important to help disadvantaged young people develop social networks and capital (Colley, 2003). It is necessary to create init iatives that involve young people not only in making decisions that affect them each or on particular services but also in making decisions that influence their communities collectively (Pierson, 2002). Organizations led by young people routine an important role in defining services and provide practical support for young persons (Pierson, 2002).The aim of the Indigenous community development at BoysTown is to help young people to re-engage in learning increase community involvement in formal education and training enhance access to sustainable mainstream employment opportunities and develop training and work opportunities through community-based social business enterprises (Youth social). According to Pierson (2002), adolescent support teams have emerged rapidly during the early 1990s.The originator adds that the aim of adolescent support teams is to divert youths from the care system and offer short-term preventive service that assists families prevent problems in relationships that might result to homelessness. The approach used by the adolescent support teams is preventive and based on time-limited, task-focused work (Pierson, 2002). Most of the work of the adolescent support teams involves negotiation and mediation betwixt young people and parents (Pierson, 2002).BoysTown enterprises are involved in several community infrastructure development, asset maintenance, and urban renewal projects in disadvantaged areas (Youth social). Enterprise-based intermediate labor markets are effective in minimizing crime and anti-social behavior and in helping young people who are socially excluded to engage again with the labor market (Youth social). According to Aiken (2007), social enterprises are considered mission-driven organizations with a commitment to a specific disadvantaged group. The author adds that placement agencies function as intermediaries in searching and training people to move into work in the mainstream labor market. Social enterprises have often focused on the inevitably of socially excluded client groups (Aiken, 2007). Aiken (2007) mentions that the origin of social and community enterprises can be found in the mutual and cooperative sector in Great Britain. The author adds that the emergence of this movement has resulted to an important pattern which has focused on the economic development of poorer communities, including the importance of maintaining paid work.Intermediate Labor Market organizations focus on short-term training and employment with the goal of trainees transitioning into paid work in other organizations (Aiken, 2007). They may be working with disadvantaged people and will have a tendency to be reliant on some degree of public sector contracting. References Aiken, M. (2007). Construction of Identity Through Photography

Construction of Identity Through PhotographyThis audition the look forer pull up stakes attempt to document the use of shape photography namely dickens sets of excogitate photographers with very different styles, Guy bourdain, Helmut Newton who do worked predominantly in the 70s and 80s and Richard Avedon and Irving Penn who worked predominately in the 50s and 60s. the essay attempt to show if expression photography contributes to promoting a positive(p) influence in constructing identity element of the female viewer. To do this the essay will define the use of semiotics modality photography, he will show techniques and nonpluss that be apply to create and sell an idea to the viewer. And determine whether the majority of the ridership of editorial hammer photography atomic number 18 influenced positively or negatively. The average readership for Britains most frequent and renowned fashion publication is fashion Britain is 646 thousand people, the p arentage age of the ridership is as followed from 17 to 19 =15 % 20 to 24 25 % 25 to 34 26 % 35 to 44 17% and 44% to above 17%, 84 % of these readers are female, there for 81 % or 523,260 readers of the publication are females between the age of 17 and 34 (Vivacom, July, 2009 online). The process of developing identity begins with the infants discovery of self, and becomes the focus of adolescence. Erik Erikson, identified the goal of adolescence as achieving a coherent identity and avoiding identity confusion. Identity is multidimensional and may include physical and rideual identity, and usually make commitments to their identity as they move into early openhandedhood. Adults may revaluate and emasculate certain aspects of their identity as life circumstances Change.(http//social.jrank.org/ 2006 online). The physical, cognitive, and social changes of adolescence allows teenagers to develop there identity that will serve as a basis for their mature lives. The emergence of abstract reasoning abi light upies allows adolescents to think about the future and experiment with different identities.James Marcia hypothesized that identity development involves two steps. Step one, the adolescent must break away from childhood beliefs to explore alternatives for identity in a particular area i.e. habiliments. (http//social.jrank.org/ 2006 online). The Second step, marcoa states that the adolescent makes a commitment as to their undivided identity in that area. Often adolescents begin to question their ideas and beliefs and enter a moratorium. The moratorium status is characterized by exploration of alternatives. Identity may occur at different clippings. For females, an important component of their identity is related to their physical appearance. Identity achievement during adolescence serves as a basis for our adult expectations and goals for ourselves. As individuals enter early matureness they use their understanding of whom they are to develop a life span construct a link b etween the identity developed in adolescence and the adult self. (http//social.jrank.org 2006). As the statement above suggests people predominantly charr are at there most influenced at there adolescence and young adults stages. As stated a large percentage of readers of magazines such as vogue fall with in this age group of adolescent to young adult. The two main types of fashion photography in fashion magazines such as Vogue are advertising and editorial, both of these photography forms use the use of signs or semiotics, in communicating the fashion to the reader mainly a woman between the age of 17 and 34.Fashion photography speaks both the reality and illusion of garments and of bodies, and in deconstructing how these elements are organized and presented, a new language and system emerges from the photographic work (Roland bath)A sign as anything which is so determined by something else, called its Object, and so determines an found upon a person, a sign is constructed of thr ee inter-related parts a sign, an object, and an meter reading, in fashion photography the sign is the photograph, this doesnt necessarily mean the focus of the physique i.e. the c circumstanceshing it could be the entire scene and the narrative behind it. The object might be the clothing or the jewellery but it may also be the mildew and the interpretation. A reading of both the previous factors, take for example the photograph at a lower place by renowned fashion photography Corrine day. plateful 1Corrine Day, 2007 Stem Golden Years, Vogue UKThis is an example of an editorial fashion photograph. If this count on were to be red as a sign first of all the image must be broken down first of all the sign the two dimensional object of a three dimensional wait onn, in the image the reader stop see facts, the location is the London tube system it is between the hours of 7 am and 12 pm as we can see the train in the background and the train totally runs between this cartridge hol der we can tell even with out knowing about the photographer we can tell that the image was taken between the 20th century and present day as this is when the tube was made. We can also see that the image include strobe flash as the sits movement has been frozen yet the trains movement is blurred this also suggests that the image was taken between this sentence as the electronic flash was also created in this time. All these facts start to tell as story a narrative and sets up the stage for The object being the array and the model.Models play a key part in selling the item as well as the ideal, and research shown in The influence of fashion magazines on the be image satisfaction of college women an exploratory analysis by Sherry L. Turner,Heather Hamilton,Meija Jacobs,Laurie M. Angood,Deanne Hovde Dwyer has sets out to find if women are influenced negatively by fashion magazines. The research shows work by Sheldon and Stevens done in the 1940s the research found that ectomorphic (having a build with little fat or muscle but with ample limbs) individuals were perceived negatively. By the late 1980s, the perception had shifted. Ectomorphics were considered to be the most sexually appealing. The research states that in 1978, mean slant of models has dropped to 84% of the population mean, and among the Miss the States Pageant contestants Prior to 1970, mean weight of the contestants was approximately 88% of the population norm The research shows that these figures are consistent with the courageousness of models appearing in Vogue from 1901 to 1981.A study done in this research proves that adolescent to young women are influenced by fashion magazines, the experiment took 49 undergraduate females enrolled in a psychology course at a New England womens college. 24 were assigned to the fashion magazine group, and 25 were assigned to the news magazine group. tests revealed no hearty differences in the mean height, weight, or age of the two groups .Eight magazin es were chose on the basis of its popularity and availability Four that had reputations of fashion and models Vogue, Bazaar, Elle, and Allure. And four news magazines used in the overtop Time, News week, News World Report, and Business Week. The participants were then assessed on perceptions of their bodies and their dieting attitudes. Examples of these questions are I am very frustrated about my weight I am triskaidekaphobic of getting fat and I diet to improve my looks. Participants were then asked to indicate which of the eight magazines they read prior to completing the questionnaire.A three-part, self-administered questionnaire was used to assess womens body image satisfaction. The first portion of the questionnaire consisted of adult figure drawings designed and illustrated by Stunkard, Sorenson, and Schulsinger (1980). Each participant was asked to examine nine female silhouettes of alter size and to indicate the figure that most clearly reflected her perceptions of her o wn body type, her ideal body type, and the body type considered to be most ideal by society. A nine-point scale was used, with the lowest numbers corresponding to the thinnest silhouettes. The applicants were then asked to wait in a waiting room one at a time four magazines were placed in front of them. For half of the participants, the waiting room contained news magazines and for the half, there were fashion magazines. After 13 minutes, participants were given the questionnaire to complete. Unlimited time was given for completion.Ten participants indicated on their questionnaire that they did not read a magazine while waiting. These students were eliminated from the data analyses. The resulting sample consisted of 18 (37%) participants in the fashion magazine limit and 21 (43%) in the news magazine condition. The research results prove what they hypothesised. Ideal weight differed for the two groups. Women who viewed fashion magazines perceived a lower ideal weight than did women who viewed news magazines.Women who viewed fashion magazines reported more frequently feeling very frustrated about their weight, weighing themselves more than once a week, exercising only to lose weight feeling guilty while eating, feeling guilty after eating, being preoccupied with the desire to be thinner and being afraid of getting fat, Similarly, when compared to women who viewed news magazines, those who viewed fashion magazines less frequently reported being pleased about their bodies, and feeling satisfied with the shape of their bodies. This research has proven that the media has is potent to adolescent and young women it shows that the fashion magazine show and ideal rather than a reflection of societies perception of the female form. These results shows that the models in the photographs have a philological effect on the women that view and therefore read them, this leads to the interpretation the interpretation is a reading of both the previous factors the sign and the object, if the target audience i.e. woman 17 to 30 years of age Weston hemisphere middle income, feels jealousy for the shape and figure of the woman they will associate the clothes she is wearing with the model her self i.e. (if I want to be like her I have to get those clothes) or in other fashion photographs like the one below by renowned British fashion photographer Norman Parkinson, the images often show a glamorous location i.e. beaches far away cities such as New York Paris etc this adds another layer to the sign if people associate the object with the sign or the model and clothing with the location there interpretation may be that if I want to be like that model and have that life style then I have to get the clothes. main office 2Norman Parkinson, 1980, Pilar CrespiAs the research earlier stated by the late 1980s, the perception had shifted ectomorphics were now considered to be the most sexually appealing, the research shows that fashion magazines changed from using large r models to thinner ones during two prominent fashion photographer working in this time were Guy bourdin and Helmut Newton.Guy Bourdin, Gaby wood from the beholder says trailblazing image-maker of the Seventies and eighties, doyen of photographic perversion, godfather of countless images we see in magazines and advertising today. Bourdin pioneered what might be called the new soft porn the acceptable face of sex to sell anything, an aesthetic too knowing, too caught up in unveiling the world of the fetish, to be actually pornographic. (The Observer, 2003) Gaby reiterates the point that this photographer although giving a lot of new ideas and style to the fashion photography industry, is somewhat responsible for the change of models in fashion photography and along with other photographers of the 80s set the theme of models getting thinner in fashion photography.Plate 3Guy Bourdin (1983) The Guy Bourdin Estate, 2003The image above is a prime example of guy bourdin image, typically containing defenceless or semi naked women and featuring shoes the main focus of the image is the body, bourdin heavily crops a large amount of his work focusing on the body rather than the persons (models) face. When looking at this photograph it is hard to concentrate on any thing but the vivid colours of the objet the fashion and the purposely lit models, the back ground has been lit but with a much lower ratio than the models again drawing the focus to the body.Helmut Newton was another renowned fashion photographer that worked in the 60s 70s and 1980s Newtons work like bourdins in controversial and provocative. More than often the images contained naked females, His works appeared in magazines including, most significantly, French Vogue.Plate 4Helmut Newton (1998) MuglerAbove is a prime example of Newtons work often cleft in black and white in high melodic phrase the female is presented square on and the clothing has a relation to sadomasochistic and the fetish. The model is corseted witch exemplifies the narrow thin shape of the model. SM is a fashion statement today because of him (Independent on Sunday,May 2001). Although a lot is wrote about Helmuts work being sexist, exploitative and misogynist but Helmuts wife renowned photographer Alice springs whom edited and curate Helmuts books and exhibitions says that he gives women power. (1994-2010 cyclopaedia Britannica,)Andy Gruenberg wrights in the New York times one of the 20th centurys most prolific and influential photographers of fashion and the famous, whose signature blend of classical elegance and cool reductivism was recognizable to magazine readers and museum goers worldwide.Plate 6Irving Penn. 1950, Vogue America CoverAbove is an example of Penns fashion work, again notice the size and shape of the model this image taken in the 1950 for a American vogue cover. Reiterating the point made in the studies and again contrasting the work and change in model shape by the 1980sConclusionIt would apeer that there was a shift in the way that the media fashion photography in particular presenter and announce an ideal towards it main demographic the research has shown the effects of this change with studys. It has a lso suggested ways in with this is achieved i.e. semiotics the researcher then applied these rules in semiotics to fashion photography works. Noted fashion photographers were then selected and shown and compared for their noted works in the decades witch they predominantly worked. Over all I believe that the essay proves and highlights the point that it set out to do but more research to reiterate the findings would have been preferred to give the argument more definition. Also more research in to other metered of philology towards the model and advertising could have strengthened the argument more so.
